Charter Yacht HANALEI BAY - Guest Comments / Reviews

Would you like to escape the wintry weather? These folks did!

HANALEI BAY is a 72-foot cutter, owned and operated by Franz & Dianne Gradler. Hanalei Bay is a large, spacious sailing yacht which accommodates up to 6 guests in three ensuite staterooms.
It is barely 48 hours since we disembarked from Hanalei Bay and we are ready to turn around and come back! There are some obvious reasons for our desire to return -- the New York weather is frigid; when we want to eat or drink, we have to serve ourselves; exercising isn't outside and aboard a kayak but on a basement treadmill instead;and there's no one continually checking on our overall level of satisfaction!

Each of our six family members, ranging in ages 6 to 80, had an exceptional vacation aboard the Hanalei Bay.  Despite the wide age range, you managed to create a vacation week that met and exceeded our expectations.  While your depth of culinary and sailing experience was evident, it was your fun company and your genuine desire to 'please' us that made for a wonderful experience.  Whether it was satisfying the diverse taste buds of our children or finding an afternoon activity that everyone was interested in participating in, your careful and considerate planning made each of us genuinely enjoy ourselves.

Thank you again for a wonderful week aboard the Hanalei Bay.  We hope we can return again and remember, if you should find yourself in the New York area, you have an open invitation.

With warm regards,
Elle
Thanks for sharing you comments with us, Elle.

Tropical Storm ANA & Hurricane BILL - Yacht Updates

With the threat of TS ANA & Hurricane Bill coming our way, we decided to sail our own boat over to Curaçao but then ANA was forecast to pass to the south of us and thus getting in our way, and as BILL was to miss the islands to the Northeast, we stayed put in St. Martin. ANA became disorganized and then spread out more like a tropical wave.

Contact ParadiseConnections.com to charter catamaran MAROLANGAWe heard from Gus & Marcella (catamaran MAROLANGA). They went to their hurricane hole in Vieques (Spanish Virgin Islands) and had lots of heavy rain & lightning. Their poor cat Sasha hid under a shelf and tried to make himself very small. They stayed there to wait out Hurricane Bill which fortunately gave our islands a wide berth. Marcella wrote today to say that they've "only had some little gusts and some rain. Not too bad…Now we getting a little bit rain from the tail of Bill. Outside are still waves 7-11 feet, so we waiting until tomorrow with sailing to Puerto Rico. Wind we have practically zero."

They are going to go into the boatyard for a little bit for new bottom paint and this and that. Marolanga is one of the few yachts chartering in the Virgin Islands through the summer season.

The trimaran PROMENADE went to their hurricane hole in Virgin Gorda, BVIs. Here's a photo of Bazza & Simeon tying lines up to the mangroves.

Kerry is very happy to be back at their dock now that the storms have safely passed by.

Charter Yacht BLITHE SPIRIT is down in Trinidad where Dominique & Michel are growing tomatoes while in the boatyard!
Dominique growing tomatoes in the boatyard. Contact ParadiseConnections.com to charter BLITHE SPIRIT
Dominique didn't have to tether down her plants as Trinidad is theoretically out of the hurricane zone and Bill was nowhere close.

John & Heidi, owner-operators of the charter yacht ANTILLEAN, are also in the boatyard in Trinidad. No pictures yet, but Heidi says that she has a crop of 30 tomato plants that she's grown from seed. Sounds like there's a little farming competition going on down there :)

Leslie & Charles of PHAEDRUS wrote to us last week... "We just got to NC on Friday and have been busy doing odd jobs, like cleaning the deck & pulling weeds out of the walkway. It's very hot here, but hopefully the temp will go down on Wednesday". Sounds like the equivalent of scraping the hull :)

Charter yacht STORM PETREL with ParadiseConnections.comSTORM PETREL is chartering in New England this summer. Laura is Illinois doing a few house projects and nursing, while Phil is aboard Storm Petrel based in Falmouth, Buzzards Bay. They had a great repositioning trip, taking only 10 days to get there from St. Thomas. Phil's advice for us was: "To come north, just set your autopilot to 355, and enjoy. The spring trip is usually easy, no winds over 30 kts, seas calm... Fall is much more of an adventure!!!!"

So, if you want an affordable, fun charter, aboard a yacht with LOTS of local knowledge of the New England cruising area, look no further than Storm Petrel. Short charters, weekend & daysails, too. Contact Paradise Connections and we'll set you up!

A couple of weeks ago, Eric from ALOHA MALOLO wrote to say that they were "going to the Statue of Liberty today if we can get this RV through the traffic. I miss the ocean and Saltydog but we are visiting many past guests who have invited us to stop by on our trip."

Charter yacht HANALEI BAY is on the hard in Trinidad. We received a call recently from Diane. They miss being on the water but they have a beautiful view of it from their patio in Vancouver BC. They had front row seats for the annual fireworks festival, The Celebration of Light, from their pieds-à-terre.

Kim & Rich on Ukele. Contact ParadiseConnections.com to charter yacht QWESTKim & Rich from the charter yacht QWEST wrote to us from the boatyard in in Fajardo, Puerto Rico where they were working on the boat and getting it ready to leave while they go to the States for a couple of months.

Kim wrote "One of the high points of our summer is the Bean Blossom Blues Fest that we going to in Brown County, Indiana, next month. We'll be spending lots of time playing our ukes and jamming with friends. We don't have any photos (yet), but here's a link to a video of a jam from last year's Bean."

So, back now to Bob & Sheila at Paradise Connections... Due to the recent storms our plans have changed a little, but we intend to pick up our mail soon in St. Thomas (thanks Reefco!) and then sail towards Curaçao. We did Hurricane OMAR last year and we don't want to do that again. Quite a scary night... Especially when you have this boat dragging down on you during the stormy night of a category 3 hurricane!
A little to close for comfort - Hurricane Omar

Nope, don't want to do that again :)

Charter Yacht HANALEI BAY - Guest Comments / Reviews - Family charter

Guest comments from a  client of ours from Brussels & Scotland for their Family New Year's Charter aboard the 72-foot charter yacht HANALEI BAY.

An extraordinary combination of technical ability, natural good humour and the wonders of the West Indies made our holiday charming and memorable.

Franz is a trained Chef and it shows. Each dish made from fresh ingredients, (even the fettuccine was made from flour water and effort!) beautifully presented on the Hanalei Bay’s amazing range of dishes and napery. Steaks on the barbecue, fresh fish caught in the morning from the boat and cooked forlunch, a truly remarkable success, i.e. of very different and always tasty dishes presented with style.

Diane and Franz offer training in fish-filleting, water sports, sailing and wildlife and Franz is an expert amateur surgeon when sea urchin spines have to be removed.

We were charmed from the moment we arrived on board. We shall return. We warmly recommend a cruise on Hanalei Bay to anyone who thinks they might like a holiday with a difference, who has sailed or might like to sail, who wants to explore inaccessible beaches and tiny islands, and who wishes to be made welcome by congenial hosts who are skilled in making guests feel happy.

We are happy for you to use any of the foregoing remarks to be shared with anyone.

I should add that in smooth weather and rough weather, we had total confidence in the boat and its owners!
– Ian

Thank you Franz and Diane for a wonderful sail aboard Hanalei Bay. Everything about this vacation has been amazing from the sailing to Watersports to discovering the famous Foxy’s, and beating Franz too many times at Kings Korners, very sorry Skipper.  Once again thank you for the amazing food and hospitality topped with the beautiful surroundings and scenery of the West Indies. Until the next time. Aufwiedersehen
- James

Our holiday on the Hanalei Bay has been one of the most memorable we’ve ever had as a family and it is one we will remember with pleasure for years to come
- Sandra

What can I add to the list of compliments already express by the rest of the family!  This has been an extremely entertaining, fun and amusing trip. I had a slight incident with the boat while water skiing, but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed myself. By the way you must try out the ‘Banana’ if you make it to “Hanalei Bay”

HANELEI BAY : CABIN CRUISE Feb.2-9,2008

HANALEI BAY: Last Minute Cabin Cruise Offered February 2-9, 2008

Due to a cancellation, the 72-foot Hanalei Bay now has two cabins available for their cabin cruise week, February 2-9, 2008.

The aft cabin is booked by a Florida couple in their 60's. He is a retired scientist & engineer while she is a stretch exercise instructor. Thus the mid-ship double cabin is available, as well as the aft twin cabin, each with their private, ensuite bathrooms. The twin cabin has two lower twin berths, not bunk beds.

The rate is $3500/wk for this cabin cruise. This is the 2-person cabin rate and not for each person. It is all-inclusive except for BVI cruising tax (not much) and guests are requested to have one dinner ashore at their own expense.

.

This is an excellent value for such a large, roomy comfortable yacht with excellent food and wonderful hospitality.

HANALEI BAY - Evening aboard in St. Thomas, USVI

Last night we had a wonderful evening aboard the charter yacht, Hanalei Bay, while we are still in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.

We had a simple, but SUPERB, meal of pork stew with sides of rice, potatoes, and mixed vegetables. Diane made a wonderful chocolate cake that I have been longing for... perfect!

Thanks guys, for having us over.

Hanalei Bay is currently available for Christmas 2007!

HANALEI BAY - Another wondeful evening with Franz & Diane

In mid-July, Hanalei Bay stopped in Marigot, St. Martin (FWI) on their way south to Trinidad and invited us aboard for cocktails and dinner.

We always enjoy time spent with Hanalei Bay. Franz & Diane are a delightful & interesting couple.

Hanalei Bay is a spacious and beautiful 72-foot, custom sailing vessel. The yacht is fully air conditioned and accommodates up to 6 guests in 3 cabins, each with ensuite heads.

Hanalei Bay is an excellent value for such a large, high-quality yacht. Hanalei Bay has an impressive list of amenities: kayaks, knee board, Jr. waterskis, tube, banana blaster!, snorkel gear, floats... or just chill out on the boat: good sound system with a wide variety of music, double hammock, karaoke with 2 mics, guitar, keyboard, bongos, and we just love their "patio" on the aft deck behind the roomy cockpit... so much space.

Here are a few comments:
  • My 11 year old daughter, after leaving the yacht, said that Franz & Diane made her feel like we were all a big family. She said "I feel like we are the only ones they treat this way". For an 11 year old to take note of that, really says something. THANKS PARADISE CONNECTIONS & HANALEI BAY FOR A FABULOUS VACATION IN THE BVI!!

  • The charter was way better than we ever imagined!!! Everyone had fun. My husband really enjoyed our little 30-60 minute snorkelling time TOGETHER everyday.
  • Todd and I had an amazing time on our vacation!!!! Words cannot really due justice to our experience. Franz and Diane were so much fun! We all really clicked, and had just a great time. Franz is responsible for my pants being too tight this week!!
You are in luck! Hanalei Bay is still available for the 2007/8 Holiday Season!
