Marolanga is a 43-foot Catana catamaran, owned and operated by Gus & Marcella, along with ship's cat, Sasha, a beautiful Persian. Marolanga is air conditioned and accommodates up to 6 guests in three cabins, each with ensuite head/shower. Marolanga has a good selection of "water toys" such as kneeboard, wakeboard, tube, kayaks; plus they love having families aboard and have toys for children.

“This has been an amazing trip! We have loved every minute of it. Sailing through the rough seas with the Christmas winds was so exhilarating. As we watched other boats falter in the winds, we knew we were safe under Gus’ steady hand. We all agree that the Indians was our favorite snorkeling area, although we loved all of our snorkeling adventures. Christmas Eve with bagels and lox and champagne was wonderful! However, nothing can top Marolanga’s cooking, barbecue and the poppers on Christmas! It has all been grand!”

The itineraries below include the Northern Exuma Cays and points of interest we've come to love.

A variety of fun stops are planned with fast, exhilarating sailing between our shoreside and on-the-water adventures. The days are scheduled for both sailing and exploring. (And don't forget the eating.. with an award-winning chef on board!)

Recommended pick-up is Norman's Cay or Staniel Cay. Drop-off is either of these locations or Nassau.

Nassau is not recommended as a pick-up due to the 40-mile upwind leg needed to arrive at the Exumas.

FIVE-NIGHT CHARTER: Normans Cay to Nassau
Day 1: Norman's to Shroud: Pick-up at McDuffs, sail to Shroud Cay, mangrove creek dinghy exploration to Exuma Sound and Camp Driftwood.
Day 2: Shroud to Warderick Wells, (Exuma Land and Sea Park): Sail/fish deep waters of Exuma Sound. Drift snorkel spectacular north end anchorage, Visitor Center, hike Boo Boo Hill
Day 3: Warderick Wells to Hawksbill: Reef snorkel (big lobsters), Plantation ruins hike.
Day 4: Hawksbill to Highborne: Snorkel drug smuggler airplane wreck, visit Highborne Marina.
Day 5: Highborne to Rose Island/Nassau roadstead: Allan's Cay iguana visit/feed, downwind run to Rose/Nassau (city by night).
Day 6: Nassau: sights and sounds, Straw Market, Atlantis Resort

Day 1: Staniel to Big Major's Spot: Pick-up at Staniel Cay Marina, snorkel James Bond's Thunderball Grotto, feed the swimming Pigs.
Day 2: Big Major's to Compass: sail up Pipe Creek, swim with Sharks, hike Crescent Beach.
Day 3: Compass to Cambridge: hike and play at Rachael's Bubblebath, snorkel caves of Rocky Dundas, feed the Jacks at our mooring.
Day 4 Cambridge to Warderick Wells (Exuma Land and Sea Park): snorkel spectacular north end anchorage, Visitor Center, hike Boo Boo Hill
Day 5: Warderick Wells to Hawksbill: Reef snorkel (big lobsters), Ruins hike.
Day 6: Hawksbill to Highborne: Snorkel drug smuggler airplane wreck, visit Highborne Marina.

The charter yacht RUNAWAY is an 82-foot Azimut motoryacht with a crew of two, and accommodates up to 8 guests in 3 cabins (one Queen and two with double beds with additional single berth above). Runaway is fully air conditioned and all staterooms have en-suite head with marble or granite countertops and enclosed shower stall. Crewed charter yacht Catamaran Soltice - Sailing & Diving Vacations in the Bahamas / Exumas

The charter catamaran SOLSTICE, a 47-foot Lagoon, is owned and operated by Liz & Cliff. Solstice is fully air conditioned and accommodates up to 6 guests in 3 double cabins with ensuite head/shower. There is also a single berth available in the center of the starboard hull. Solstice has an 11-foot dinghy with 15HP motor, 2-person kayak, 2 standup paddleboards (SUPs), snorkel equipment, fishing gear, floating mats, satellite radio, flat screen TV/DVD, internet where available, etc. Cliff is a dive instructor and diving is available for certified and non-certified divers. Diving is dependent on conditions, typically 2-4 times per week for up to 4 divers, and only one or two dives/week for 5 or 6 divers.

Pentesilea 3 is a 39-foot Privilege catamaran with an owner-operator crew of two. The yacht accommodates up to 4 guests in the 2 starboard cabins, each with their own head/shower. We had a wonderful trip with Bill & Ann. The yacht was immaculate and comfortable. We learned a lot about the sailing life and what it takes to maintain a sailboat. I appreciated Ann & Bill's attention to detail. The separate companionway to our stateroom was a plus.

I have never eaten so well in my life! Ann is a fabulous, talented, creative cook. We had wonderfully romantic, candlelit meals every evening under the stars. Ann & Bill prefer to leave us alone at meal times. They eat down below, we eat in the cockpit.

Everything worked better than we expected. We ended up diving five days as Bill is an excellent divemaster and took us to great sites.

Laura and I enjoyed our time on Corus quite a bit. Bill and Ann were very accommodating and made sure we had lots of chances to go snorkeling and hiking. They were also very helpful in recommending great beaches and restaurants. The Hasteads really know the area well and were careful to point out important sights and give a bit of history as well.

The Corus is a beautiful vessel. She's lovely to look at and very roomy. Under sail or under power, she's stable and solid. Bill and Ann obviously take great care of Corus and are rightfully proud of her. Topside and below were absolutely spotless and polished. The Hasteads have been sailing together for years, and they have it down to a science. I've sailed with couples who shouted at each other the whole time. Not pleasant. Conversely, much of the time Bill and Ann communicated with hand signals and it was really fun to watch a well-choreographed team.

I'm still trying to figure out where Ann kept the Sous-Chef and the rest of the kitchen! How she turned out such great-looking and great tasting meals as quickly as she did is still a mystery. Delicious and varied menu items were beautifully presented every day.

Paradise Connections did a great job of matching us with a correctly-sized boat and working with our schedule. Bob and Sheila kept in touch regularly and patiently explained the charter process. Follow-up questions were promptly answered and they made sure we were well-informed.

Yes, I think we would like to charter again and we'd certainly consider Corus in the future. Scuba certification is on my “bucket list” and I think Bill and Ann and BVI would be the perfect combo for getting the job done. I might have to fast for a week or two prior to going again, just to be able to justify eating all of the great food!

Definitely happy campers:

The vacation was absolutely amazing!!! It was such a magical experience and Geoff and Iza are two of the main reasons for that. I can't say enough about the hospitality they offered, their kindness, the comfort, they are the ultimate in hosting this type of trip. To say that they exceeded our expectations is an understatement.

The food was a 15 out of 10, every meal was better than the last. Homemade bread every day!!!! Iza made sure that all of our requests were met when it came to the menu. She was even considerate enough to remember which one of us didn't like eggs and also made the portion sizes perfect for each individual. The four of us all love to eat and enjoy good food and her food was above and beyond. I have requested all of her recipes but I don't think I will be able to replicate her touch when it came to preparing our meals.

The boat was always clean and unfortunately Geoff and Iza spent quite a bit of time picking up after us.... We found the boat to be the perfect size for us, the best part was the front bow with the trampolines. Laying out there when the sails were up and we were crashing into the waves was an experience we will never forget. I should also mention the hammock and being able to drink a mimosa while laying out there in the morning sun was wonderful. The cabins were clean and bathrooms were always clean. The outside dining table was the only place we ate, the fact that it was shaded and out of the sun was perfect and the seating was so comfortable. Oh, and I would be re-missed if I didn't mention the table settings that she had. Like I said, the thought, the time, the effort that was put into our vacation is unmatched.

Geoff was a wonderful captain. Our itinerary was perfect and it allowed us to see what we wanted, the only flaw was that we didn't have more time to continue our journey. We can't wait to book our next trip with Geoff and Iza and see some of the other islands we weren't able to squeeze in this trip. I have traveled all over the world and between the four of us on this trip we have covered most of the world. This was by far the best vacation I have had. I have a villa booked in St. John for a week in January and we are trying to figure out a way to cancel and stay with Geoff and Iza instead. If we can't cancel then we will be with them for at least two nights and go to the full moon party.

Bottom line, Geoff and Iza are the best of the best! The trip wouldn't have been half as wonderful if we had a different crew. There hasn't been a day so far that we haven't said "I miss Geoff and Iza".

We are pleased to welcome s/y XIUMA, a 55-foot Oyster, to the Caribbean yacht charter fleet. She is owner-operated by Virginia Lee (chef) and her partner Jonathan Wehrung (captain). The name XIU-MA (pronounced shoo-mah) is comprised of two Chinese characters which translates into English as "Elegant Horse".

XIUMA has twice circumnavigated the globe, crossing all of the world's oceans. She has won the Sydney to Hobart race two times in the cruising class with her former owner under her previous name, "Capricco of Rhu".

Known for her sailing performance, she is as elegant as she is fast! As a charter yacht she continues to sail at 8-9 knots even fully loaded with cruising gear and wine!

XIUMA is best suited for two guests or families of four using any two of the three cabins. The spacious, full-width master cabin (aft) has a walk-around queen berth, ensuite electric head and stall shower. The two forward cabins share a electric head and shower. One cabin (forward) has a double V-berth, while the other (starboard) has upper and lower single berths. Virginia has chosen some very elegant custom bedding making the guest cabins even more inviting and luxurious.

Jonathan is definitely an adventure-loving captain. He is certified to teach sailing, wakeboarding, waterskiing, and also snow-skiing and snowboarding!

RECIPE: Coq au Vin, from Jambalaya

Sylvie, from the charter yacht Jambalaya, shares a favorite family recipe which is quick and easy for family and friends over the holidays. Serve with roast potatoes, crusty bread to soak up the delicious juices and more French wine... bien sûr!

COQ au VIN : Serves 4-6
2 chicken breasts
4 chicken drumsticks
4 chicken thighs
150g diced bacon (4 oz)
10 shallots peeled
Thyme and rosemary sprigs
1/2 tsp dried chili flakes
3 tbsp olive oil
250 ml white wine (one 8 oz cup)
2 tsp of brown sugar
Small knob of butter
350g mixed mushrooms, if possible baby bella mushrooms (10 oz)
5 garlic cloves
Fresh coriander
Sea salt
Black pepper
Preheat oven to 200° C (390°F)
Arrange the chicken pieces in a roasting pan and scatter with the bacon, shallots, thyme, rosemary, 2 whole garlic cloves and chilli flakes. Season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Drizzle with olive oil and roast in the oven for 20 minutes.
Add the wine and brown sugar and roast for another 30 minutes. Remove from the
oven.
Heat the butter in a frying pan then add mushrooms and garlic and brown for 3 to 5 minutes.
Tip into the roasting pan and scatter with coriander!
Bon appetit!

Kerry, a good friend & owner-operator of the popular 65-foot charter yacht PROMENADE, only has a few weeks available for charter this season:

Promenade is a spacious 65-foot trimaran, with a beam of 35 feet, that accommodates up to 10 guests in 5 cabins. The two forward cabins have Queen berths and ensuite head/shower, while the 3 aft cabins (one Queen, and two cabins that can either be configured as Twins or a King) share 2 heads with showers.

Promenade is an excellent choice for families or a group of friends, whether you dive or not, as there's plenty of things to do. "Will the kids get bored?" you ask... NO WAY!

There's lots of things to do aboard Promenade: diving, snorkeling, kayaking, waterskiing, fishing, kneeboard, tubing, banana riding, "power lounger", DVD, hiking, beachcombing, listening to tunes, or just chilling out... This story is not about them :)
A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.

Every word out of the bird's' mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even more rude. John, in desperation, threw up his hand, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms and said "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude.

As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird spoke-up, very softly, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

Welcome, Robert Thunder!

Robert Thunder began his culinary career in 1997 at the age of 16. A year later, he won the Gold Award for "Best in Class" for his duck in the world famous Hotelympia competition. He was invited to compete in the British Culinary Arts team for the 1998 Culinary World Cup, and voted "Junior Chef of the Year" in 1999. After this distinguished start to his career, Robert worked in restaurants, catering services and (since 2005) several yachts of various sizes serving gourmet food to some of the toughest customers on the planet. Before joining Sweetest Thing, Robert was delighting patrons of an upscale boutique restaurant just outside Kingston Jamaica called EITS, where reviews have been glowing.

Charter Yacht Corus : Charter Comments

Here are comments from charterers of ours who celebrated a 50th birthday aboard Corus, a 45-foot Whitby ketch owner-operated by Ann & Bill Hasted.

Laura and I enjoyed our time on Corus quite a bit. Bill and Ann were very accommodating and made sure we had lots of chances to go snorkeling and hiking. They were also very helpful in recommending great beaches and restaurants. The Hasteds really know the area well and were careful to point out important sights and give a bit of history as well.

The Corus is a beautiful vessel. She's lovely to look at and very roomy. Under sail or under power, she's stable and solid. Bill and Ann obviously take great care of Corus and are rightfully proud of her. Topside and below were absolutely spotless and polished. The Hasteds have been sailing together for years, and they have it down to a science. I've sailed with couples who shouted at each other the whole time. Not pleasant. Conversely, much of the time Bill and Ann communicated with hand signals and it was really fun to watch a well-choreographed team.

I'm still trying to figure out where Ann kept the Sous-Chef and the rest of the kitchen! How she turned out such great-looking and great tasting meals as quickly as she did is still a mystery. Delicious and varied menu items were beautifully presented every day.

Paradise Connections did a great job of matching us with a correctly-sized boat and working with our schedule. Bob and Sheila kept in touch regularly and patiently explained the charter process. Follow-up questions were promptly answered and they made sure we were well-informed.

Yes, I think we would like to charter again and we'd certainly consider Corus in the future. Scuba certification is on my “bucket list” and I think Bill and Ann and BVI would be the perfect combo for getting the job done. I might have to fast for a week or two prior to going again, just to be able to justify eating all of the great food!

We have been told that the yacht is just finishing a major refit up in Beaufort to prepare for chartering and will soon be on their way to the Virgin Islands. This refit includes: all new carpeting, new flat screen TVs, all new upholstery, new fixtures, granite counters in the heads and new exterior upholstery and canvas.

We are eagerly awaiting the new photos they'll send when the work is completed. Please keep in mind that the pictures in their electronic brochure are not current, though it does give you an idea about the space aboard.

The motoryacht Everest is an 80-foot San Lorenzo, fully air conditioned, and accommodates up to 8 guests in 4 staterooms, each with entertainment center, flatscreen TV, and ensuite heads. The master stateroom has a walkaround King bed and also a Jacuzzi tub, the VIP cabin has a Queen berth and also has a Jacuzzi tub. There are two other guest cabins, one with a double berth and one with two twins (not bunks).

Everest has a spacious main salon with formal dining area and a fabulous bar. The interior is a blend of rich fabrics and exotic woods. Her aft deck is the perfect place for al fresco dining and the fly bridge is an excellent spot for sightseeing, cocktails and entertaining. WiFi, too!

That's it! Summer is officially over. Today is the first day of Autumn.

We hope you had an excellent summer and now that the days are growing shorter and cooler your thoughts turn to a sailing vacation in the warm, blue water of the Caribbean.

If you are still considering a New Years yacht charter (approximately December 27 - January 3) there are not too many yachts left, so get off the fence :)

There is better availability for Christmas week with most charters ending on December 26 or 27 at the latest... If these dates don't fit your schedule, just ask and we'll try to work something out.

In a recent press release, Jet Blue airlines announces that they are adding seasonal service between Boston, MA and St Thomas, USVI beginning December 15, 2011, AND that they will be offering flights twice daily between San Juan, PR and St Thomas, AND daily flights between San Juan and St Croix, USVI.

Boston's largest carrier, JetBlue Airways (Nasdaq: JBLU), today announced it's making it easier for New Englanders to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands with plans to launch five weekly flights between Boston Logan International Airport and St. Thomas International Airport (STT) effective December 15, 2011. The southbound flight to St. Thomas will operate non-stop, and the northbound flight to Boston will operate via San Juan, Puerto Rico.

PHAEDRUS retires from yacht charters

We are very sad that Charles, Leslie, and Lila, have sold Phaedrus, their charter yacht of many years. Phaedrus was a very popular yacht and one we could always depend on.

We are happy that they have started a new adventure. They bought a place in North Carolina a few years back and Charles loves toodling about on his farm machinery.

Includes: All meals aboard and ship's standard bar, cruising taxes, port taxes, overnight air conditioning and all on board ship's toys. This will include SCUBA diving for any CERTIFIED divers on a casual basis. Charter Yacht THREE MOONS: Virgin Islands Pirate Itinerary

Today we have a guest blog from Shelly & Randy owner-operators of the Charter Yacht THREE MOONS, a 72-foot Irwin ketch, featuring their special "A Pirate's Life for Me" sailing itinerary for the British Virgin Islands...

Arrrgh, mateys! Seek ye the treasure of Blackbeard the Pirate and the entire brethren of scoundrels in the British Virgin Islands? Aye, then come ye along on this trail of BVI coastal hideouts and the seafaring scalawags that made these islands their home. Ye shall see the island that was named after the notorious Blackbeard, the salty waters under which his trusty Queen Anne’s Revenge anchored, and the bloody shoals where these feared pirates played.

The 'Golden Era' of piracy for the most part took place during the first quarter of the 18th Century and has left a legacy that perpetuates the rich and mysterious history of the BVI. Below is a sample itinerary focusing on pirate lore:

DAY 1. Discover ye the ways of the pirate! We'll meet ye at the airport, get ye gear settled and then sail ye down to Jost Van Dyke, named after a famous Dutch pirate and home of today’s famous Foxy’s!

Despite rumors that the island's name comes from that of a 17th century Dutch privateer, Joost van Dyk, who used its harbors as a hideout, there is no factual evidence supporting this claim. Just who Jost Van Dyke's namesake is remains a mystery. John C. Lettsome (of Little Jost Van Dyke), founder of the Medical Society of London is Jost Van Dyke's most noteworthy resident. Although the English captured the BVI in 1672, it seems that Jost Van Dyke was mostly ignored until the mid-18th century. A map drawn of the BVI in 1717 by Captain John Walton does not depict either Jost Van Dyke or Little Jost Van Dyke.

Foxy's Tamarind Bar & Restaurant is known for the fun group of people who enjoy island music, festivities and the overwhelming weekend buffets. The restaurant guarantees the fish to be fresh-caught within 3 hours of serving! Foxy's is best if you are there on a Friday or Saturday night for fun dancing and music.

DAY 2. Sail by jib, main & mizzen up the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Norman Island, aka Treasure Island, as named by famous author Robert Louis Stevenson! Norman Island is reputed to be named after Captain Norman, a pirate who was eventually apprehended and hanged by the Spanish Guarda Costas, the historical coast guard for Puerto Rico. While we are anchored at Norman Island, you'll definitely want to snorkel the Caves. It's a "must do"! Yes, treasure really was found there, hidden in the back of one of the smallest caves. Also, you’ll enjoy a to visit Pirates Bight Restaurant on the beach. They fire a mini cannon at 4 p.m. to announce happy hour to the anchorage. Their adjoining shop is where you can see many well preserved fascinating artifacts of "pirate life" from long ago! And there’s a nice hike with great scenic views around Spy Glass Hill.

For the young mateys, Three Moons offers a treasure hunt adventure. Kids are dinghied to Pirate’s beach where they must help the marooned pirate guide solve puzzles and riddles in order to uncover the clues that will lead them to the buried treasure.

Party like a pirate at the famous William Thornton Bar which is an old pirate ship bar full of "characters". There are several wonderful places to snorkel here and we hope to anchor the yacht in our "favorite spot" so that you can hop off the stern and snorkel right over the beautiful coral reefs.

DAY 3. “Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum! Fifteen Men on a Dead Man’s Chest!” Today, we’re sailing by the island of Dead Chest (which means “coffin” in pirate language), on our way to Peter Island ! Blackbeard marooned his men and left them with only a pistol and a bottle of rum. Their only chance of survival was to either be picked up by a passing ship or brave swimming the channel to Peter Island.

Peter Island is the largest private island in the BVI and the fifth largest of 60 islands, quays, and exposed reefs that comprise the BVI. You can almost imagine the pirate ships of the old days anchored in the calm waters of Great Harbor! The island was named after Pieter Adriensen (nicknamed "the Commander") who was the brother Abraham Adriensen, Patron of Tortola under the Dutch West India Company in the early 17th century. Pieter Adriensen and Joost van Dyk built a fort and slave pens at Great Harbour on Peter Island to facilitate privateering and the nascent trade in slaves from Angola. A new restaurant has been built using the walls of the old fort. It’s a great place to spend the afternoon on the beach with a tropical drink!

The only hotel, the 52-room Peter Island Resort, ranked in Conde Nast Traveler’s “Gold List,” and the Travel and Leisure “T+L 500” for 2007, is accessible by boat or helicopter. It has since twice been named by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the "Best Places to Stay in the World".

This island has very good snorkeling with a wide variety depending on which side of the anchorage you are at. Ask us about the amazing dolphin experiences we've had here! Need to stretch your legs and get a little exercise? We think Peter Island has of the best walks or hiking if you are inclined...anywhere in the islands!

DAY 4. Cooper Island is a very good anchorage for a lunch stop, good snorkeling and a nice, casual restaurant called the Cooper Island Beach Club with the best conch fritters anywhere from Key West to Trinidad! The island lies adjacent to "wreck alley", a popular wreck diving site in the British Virgin Islands where a number of vessels have been deliberately sunk as dive sites. If the weather is very calm, we'll be happy to spend the night in the anchorage. If not, we'll sail on...perhaps to the secluded Savannah Bay in Virgin Gorda.

DAY 5. Tighten up on the mainsail lads! Lets get to The Baths, Virgin Gorda early! Virgin Gorda is the third-largest (after Tortola and Anegada) and second most populous of the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Located at approximately 18 degrees, 48 minutes North, and 64 degrees, 30 minutes West, it covers an area of about 8 square miles (21 km²). Christopher Columbus is said to have named the island "The Fat Virgin", because the island's profile on the horizon looks like a fat woman lying on her side. Snorkel, explore the large granite boulders, grottos and rock formations and return to your boat about 1 p.m. to set out on a close reach for Gorda Sound on Virgin Gorda. The North Sound of Virgin Gorda encompasses the famous Bitter End Yacht Club, Biras Creek Resort, Saba Rock Resort, Leverick Bay and St. Eustatius. There’s so much to do and see here that one can easily spend a couple of days enjoying all the activities! Some of our favorites include snorkeling the cannons from the Wreck of the Rhone, visiting the open air salt water aquarium at Saba Rock, dining at Biras Creek Resort and enjoying the Michael Beans show at Leverick Bay.

**Note: One of our most successful "island tours" is the option of taking a private sightseeing cab ride from the Baths over the crest of Virgin Gorda to the Bitter End Yacht Club on the other side. This ride takes only about 20 minutes. The views & photo ops of Anegada from the top of Virgin Gorda are superb! If exploring the Bitter End & North Sound on the other side of the island is tops on your "to do" list, you may want to consider this reasonably priced alternative. We can pack you a picnic lunch for the beach at the Baths or you can have the best BLT sandwich of your life for $8.00 at Mad Dog's Bar while enjoying the view. Oh and don't forget the pina coladas! They're fantastic too! While you are doing enjoying this little side trip, we'll move the yacht around to the other side of the island and wait for your return. This option allows you to pack the absolute "most fun" into your day!

DAY 6. Heave Ho! It’s an easy beam reach sail to Anegada. As the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean, Anegada is famous for it's long stretches of quiet beaches, the large salt ponds that cover the West end of the island, unique fauna found no where else an Caribbean flamingos. Other rare or endangered animals include the Anegada rock iguana and several species of turtles. Conch, Caribbean lobster, and many fishes can be found near Anegada, particularly in the deep waters off the North Drop to the north of the island. The reef has claimed more than 200 shipwrecks, including HMS Astraea in 1808, the Donna Paula (1819), the MS Rocus (1929). It is a very flat island and not visible until you are within several miles of it, by which time you are already over the reef that surrounds it. It takes considerable navigational skills to enter the anchorage. Once there it is fun to hire an open air cab, for $10 per person/round trip to Loblolly Bay on the north side for snorkeling (absolutely fantastic!) or swimming on one of the most beautiful, isolated beaches in the world. There is no anchoring in this area, so you must take a ride to get there. There is a Tiki bar/restaurant called the Bamboo Hut there that serves fantastic fish, fried chicken and Anegada lobster for lunch. The Anegada Reef Hotel is famous for casual barefoot beach-side lobster barbecues...caught that day! You may want to consider this for one of your special dinners ashore!

DAY 7. Marina Cay & Scrub Island. Marina Cay, an 8-acre island was uninhabited until 1937, when award-winning author Robb White and newly married wife Rosalie “Rodie” Mason settled on the island. He wrote a novel about his experiences building his home on the island which was made into a movie: Our Virgin Island- filmed as Virgin Island in 1958; it starred John Cassavetes, Sidney Poitier, and Ruby Dee. The movie is on board for your viewing pleasure! It’s interesting to note that the original dirt landing strip at Beef Island airport in Tortola was built just for this movie! Visit Robb & Rodie’s home while enjoying a sunset cocktail and live music from 5:30-7:30pm. You’ll find photos of them located at Pusser’s Restaurant.

Scrub Island is barely a stones throw away with lots of wonderful reef for snorkeling in between the two islands. Recently named by Travel & Leisure as one of “The Best Secret Islands on Earth”, Scrub Island resort has become one of our favorite stops as they are very boater friendly and happy for everyone to use their beautiful new facilities. Their pool has a waterfall and yes, we admit it, the Captain has happily slid down their water-slide. He's a big kid at heart! Both restaurants at the resort offer great dining experiences.

DAY 8. It's a quick, 30 minute hop back over to Trellis Bay, Beef Island Airport, making your departure morning very relaxed and hassle free.

The anchorages mentioned are the most popular and considered to be the ‘not to be missed’ spots. As we say, all itineraries are "written in jello" in the islands. The beauty of being on board a private yacht is having the freedom to pick and choose what you want to do from day to day. You will of course find your own favorite harbors, and each time you return, we promise, you will find another new location that will enchant you.

We hope you enjoy your pirate tour of the islands! No, there aren’t any pirates here today; but the spirit remains! There is so much to see and do in the British Virgin Islands!

How did you enjoy your charter?
It was wonderful!
Did you find your crew to be helpful, accommodating and friendly?
Rik and Ann treated us like old friends. They were very helpful, and so much fun! We were a tough bunch--picky eaters (one vegan, one just picky) and they really worked with us to make us incredible meals. Also, one was 78 years old, one with poor balance….not quick getting around and in and out of boat/dingy, but Ann and Rik were always supportive and patient. Lots of fun playing Trivial Pursuit and euchre with them. We really felt at home on the Sandcastle.
Was the yacht comfortable, clean and well maintained?
Yes
How would you describe the quality and presentation of the meals served on board ?
I took pictures, the presentation was so good! All vegan meals, and great variety. Really, really good food! And Rik is a fantastic bartender!
How did you find the services offered by Paradise Connections ?
Great
Would you be interested in taking another yacht vacation in the future?
Not likely, this was a once in a lifetime experience… If we do another, it will be more than 10 years from now.

Yes -- both the night before and night after charter.
If so, which one and what are your comments?

Hotel 1829. Close, clean; clean but small pool. Airconditioned. No one to help up & down the numerous stairs with bags….there was someone to help my mom (78 years old) when she arrived, which was lucky since she could not have carried her bag up safely. Stairs tough to negotiate even without a bag. So would not recommend unless very strong and good balance. Also not great since no food in bar--my mom went without dinner when she arrived, as going into town was too much of a hike for her and she didn't want to go out alone. It was an inexpensive hotel and close to ferry, so it worked well for us.

There are two full-width guest cabins with King-sized berths and ensuite head/shower, plus the library settee converts into a Queen or can be configured as single upper/lower bunks.
